Families Witness Slicing, Dicing, and Icing at Lake Louise

Between January 14 and 16, 2005, teams of two will compete in the Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Now recognized as a world-class event, Ice Magic draws professional ice carvers from the United States, Canada, Sweden, Japan and France.

During this three-day event, each team will carve 10 ice blocks weighing 300 pounds each into breathtaking works of frozen art. Finished sculptures, some up to seven feet tall, are judged by International Ice Carving officials on: overall impression, use of ice, technical skill, design, and composition. Members of the public, who may stroll through the area and witness the ice transformations, are invited to enter a ballot for the People's Choice Award.

Glittering with refracted sunlight during the day, and spot lit by flood lights at night, the spectacular sculptures adorn the walkways in front of the Chateau until the annual spring thaw arrives, typically sometime in March.
