Fun, Free & Full of Flavor
by Bob Carter
It's always fun to take a factory tour and see how some of your favorite things are manufactured. Imagine seeing potato chips, pretzels, and cheese curls being made and packaged fresh off the assembly line. You can do just that during what's known as the "tastiest tour in town." It's a dream come true for over 100000 visitors each year at Herr Foods, Inc., in Nottingham, Pennsylvania.
During an hour-long Herr's production-plant tour beginning in the Herr's Visitor Center, you'll get in the mood by viewing a video narrated by Chipper the Chipmunk, Herr's playful mascot. After the video, you're invited to visit the production plant to satisfy the senses with sights, smells, and tastes of some mighty tasty snacks.
You'll get an opportunity to see tractor trailers unloading millions of the potatoes to soon be washed, peeled, sliced, cooked, and seasoned. Herr's produces 7,000 pounds of potato chips per hour. What's more, you'll get a chance to sample them fresh from the oven. The ones you don't eat, you'll see being bagged, boxed, and prepared for delivery by over 400 route trucks.
On the tour you'll also see other snacks being made. Every hour Herr's produces about 3,500 pounds of corn chips or tortilla chips; 3,700 pounds of pretzels, and 1,000 pounds of popcorn or cheese curls. Although not every Herr's snack is made daily, you should see five different snacks on the day of your visit.
It's a free, fun-filled morning or afternoon of educational tid-bits, technological wizardry, and tasty little morsels. Plan time to also visit the nifty gift shop, tasty snack bar, and the lunch counter, too.
Herr's Snack Factory complimentary tours are given Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday morning 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The tour is handicapped accessible. Advance reservations are highly recommended for this popular, family adventure. There's plenty of car and RV parking at the plant. For more information or to schedule your tour, call 1-800-63-SNACK or visit them on the web.
