Here on the west coast of Baja California, you'll find some of the best whale watching in the world. Nearly 20,000 grey whales come here from January through April to breed and birth their young in the lagoons and bays surrounding this region. If you come here during this time period, you may even meet some of Baja's famous "friendlies", a small group of whales who find humans particularly fascinating. In addition to grey whales, Baja's offshore waters and the Sea of Cortez are filled with numerous whale species including blue whales, orcas, humpbacks, minkes, Bryde's, and others.
You can often see the whales from the shores around this area, or you can take a tour vessel out into the waters. If you'll be viewing these gentle creatures from the shores, check out the bluffs along the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road. The El Mirador turnoff (about 20 miles north of Ensenada) offers particularly excellent views. Other great places are around Magdalena Bay at Estero Soledad or San Carlos, or near the town of Guerrero Negro.
