North Carolina: Carova Beach
Beautiful beaches and wild horses are the attractions at this beach community on the North Carolina/Virginia border. A herd of more than 20 wild mustangs roam the beach between Whalehead Beach and the Virginia state border. Kids love to watch them eat the grass in front of the beach houses or along the dunes. The community has tried to gate the horses north of the developed areas, but the horses keep coming back for that sweet green grass. The beaches in this section of North Carolina are particularly beautiful: wide, shell-strewn and gradual -- no steep slopes or drop-offs. Whalehead Beach and Corolla are especially good for those with small children. You'll need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to drive up to Carova, but they're available for rent in Corolla. The drive up the beach to Carova is fun with kids. Maybe you'll even get to see the buffalo that roams the Carova area. We've never found him, but we've seen lots of horses, birds, and dolphins.
Corolla Light, one of the resort communities in this area, offers an organized kids program during the summer, as well as tennis, racquetball, indoor and outdoor pools, and a variety of family-oriented activities. A championship golf course is located five minutes away.
