Montana: National Bison Range

When you must see some buffalo, take a trip to the National Bison Range where about 500 buffalo roam the range along with elk, sheep, deer and antelope. You can tour the area in your car or take one of the self-guided hikes around the park's 18,540 acres. The Red Sleep Mountain Tour is a 19-mile trip along unpaved roads. The Buffalo Prairie Drive trail is about 30-45 minutes in length.

The best time to visit the area is from mid-May through mid-September when all the tours are open. All tours are shut down during the buffalo round-up which takes place in late September and early October. For more information, call the National Bison Range at (406) 644-2211 or on the web at www.gorp.com/gorp/resource/us_nwr/mt_NATIO.htm
