Australia: Fraser Island
Heading to the Land Down Under this summer? Then think about visiting the largest sand island in the world -- Fraser Island. For those who love nature at its best (not to mention adventure!), this is one great place. Rent a 4WD and drive along the beach, or drive through the spectacular rain forest and bush to see wild dingos, wild horses, and lots of other creatures. You can drive along the beach and see multi-colored sand cliffs, shipwrecks, and tons of bird life. The beach goes on forever, and your 4WD trip will be a real adventure. Be prepared for lots of bucking and bouncing action .... the shock absorbers on the jeep (not to mention your own) will get a real workout! If you go to Fraser from August through October, you can take a cruise out to see the humpback whales. The whales in this area (about 2500) migrate between Antarctica and the Great Barrier Reef. Along this route, each of the whales visits Hervey Bay for a period of 2-5 days, and the viewing is spectacular.
If you'd like to stay on Fraser overnight, check out the Kingfisher Bay Resort. It features upscale accommodations, restaurants, pools, a beach, watersports, bush walks, ranger-guided 4WD eco-tours, and their own whale watching cruises in-season.
