Secluded 2,600 acre Mountain Lake is located at the top of Salt Pond Mountain in Virginia's Jefferson National Forest. The lake is over 6,000 years old, and is the highest in elevation east of the Mississippi River. A Wilderness Conservancy has been established at the lake to preserve the natural beauty of the area.
Mountain Lake Hotel, named "one of America's family favorite resorts" by Better Homes & Gardens Magazine, is a sprawling, stately stone resort overlooking the lake. Parts of the movie "Dirty Dancing" were filmed at Mountain Lake Hotel, turning it into a movie set for weeks. This beautiful property has been treating guests to southern hospitality for nearly 150 years.
Families will find lots of activities available at Mountain Lake, including fishing, tennis, swimming, carriage rides, boat rides, golf, hiking, mountain biking, and organized activities like cookouts and storytelling, and magic shows. There are 15 miles of hiking trails around the property, and there are four kinds of water crafts available for boating: pedal boats, row boats, canoes, or pontoon boats. The resort's Summer Camp for children aged 5-12 is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from mid-June through mid-August. The Camp focuses on outdoor education with games and activities, and nature appreciation is also an integral part of the program.
Over twenty different types of accommodations are available to guests, ranging from standard hotel rooms and suites to one-to four-bedroom cottages.
