The Bark Eater (a Mohawk word for the Algonquins, which white men initially and inappropriately applied to the mountains) is a 150-year- old stagecoach stop converted into a classic country inn in the Adirondacks. The family gives hiking and touring suggestions to all of their guests.

Activities include: horseback-riding center and cross-county ski-touring center. Joe Pete Wilson is not only the owner of the inn, but is also an Olympic skier. He wrote a book on cross-county skiing and has a lot of helpful tips.

Dinner is served around community tables. You can look into the open kitchen to watch the preparations. The chef adapts as needed for the younger guests. Over coffee everyone is savoring the companionship and fine cuisine.
