Rosario Resort and Spa

Orcas Island, Washington

For nearly a century, Rosario has been a haven for families, first as a private home and later as a full-service resort retreat. Situated on Cascade Bay, the resort spreads out over 30 acres linked together by forest, gardens and footpaths. The centerpiece of the resort is the 54-room Moran Mansion, built by Robert Moran, a former mayor of Seattle, in 1909. The mansion incorporates the restaurant, lounge, a museum, the music room, and the 10-treatment room Avanyu Spa.

The Spa features a complete menu of spa and wellness programs for adults and teens as well as offering an introductory massage to children ages six to twelve. Services include massage therapies, skin care programs, herbal wraps and aerobic and yoga classes. Exercise and weight room, whirlpool and sauna round out the amenities in addition to the indoor therapeutic pool. Special spa-coordinated menus are available for groups of 15 or more and are designed by the executive chef upon request.

The treatments designed for children and teens are offered at the same time as adult treatments, allowing a family to enjoy the benefits of the spa together. The Young Person's Facial offers a gentle mask applied to the face while hands receive a paraffin mask treatment. This facial lasts about 20 minutes. The Children's Introductory Massage is a gentle yet energizing 20-minute treatment using a combination of Swedish and Reiki therapies. This treatment is appropriate for children 6-12 years of age.

Once the family has finished relaxing in the Avanyu Spa, there are a myriad of outdoor activities and adventures to be found outdoors at Rosario. The entire group can start a hike right from the resort heading up into the 5,000 acre Moran State Park where five fresh water lakes are surrounded by 30 miles of wooded trails. Mt. Constitution, the highest peak in the San Juan's, offers magnificent views of neighboring islands, the straits, the Cascade and Olympic Mountains. If cycling is the family passion, the Resort offers bicycle rentals to navigate the 57-square-mile island, on or off-road.

Exploring the saltwater is an unforgettable experience. Families may rent 2-person sea kayaks for either a guided tour or to set off on their own to explore. The waters and skies surrounding Orcas Island are teeming with wildlife large and small. Look for bald eagle, harbor seal, otters and whales. Whale watching is a great way to get up close to some of the most incredible animals in the world. Three resident pods of Orca whales reside in the area from April to October to the delight of all who a lucky enough to encounter them.

Orcas Island is the largest island in the San Juan Archipelago, featuring 57 miles of family friendly mountain vistas, wooded trails and 125 miles of saltwater shoreline. Summer temperatures range between 70 and 80 degrees. Located just 80 miles north of Seattle, Rosario Resort & Spa is easily accessible by many means, including ferry, water taxi, private boat or plane and sea plane. Getting there is half the fun!
