Kentucky State Parks: Big Bone Lick State Park

In prehistoric times, this park area was once a huge, sticky salt swamp. Many prehistoric mammals died here, and their remains became fossilized and preserved for us to see. Many of the remains have been excavated and have been sent to museums all around the world.

At the Park's Visitors' Center, a video is shown to explain the history of the park and what led to the mammals' death. You'll find models of some of the mammals on display outside the museum, as well as an exhibit showing what a paleontological dig looks like. Much of the fossil treasure located at this park is being held until enough money for exhibition and care can be raised.

A small admissions fee is charged, and a gift shop is also available on the premises.
