Resort Overview: This resort has received many family-related accolades, including being named "Top 10 U.S. Family Resort" by Family Circle magazine and "Favorite Family Resort in the U.S." by Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

The resort offers a free class ski or snowboard lesson with any equipment rental on all levels. Children 5 and under ski free, and Kids Eat Free dining options are available for those 12 and under.

Day Care: Camp Wintergreen-Wintergreen's children's programs have been recognized nationally as some of the best in the country. Family Circle and Better Homes and Gardens magazines selected Wintergreen as one of the "Top Family Resorts in the Country." Your kids will love our state-of-the-art Treehouse children's facility, featuring programs for all age groups and a playground. Another playground is located at Lake Monocan in the valley.

Winter Programs

Ski Cubs- For ages 3 through 12. Offers the littlest skier the chance to get started in this great family sport. Children combine flexible ski time in the Treehouse dedicated terrain garden with fun indoor day camp activities. All this with the same counselor, allowing the children to learn at their own pace and comfort level. Available during ski season.

Ski Cats/Rider Cats - For ages 6 through 12. Children discover the excitement of skiing and snowboarding while learning the basics in their own ski area. Four hours of lesson time, lunch and playtime are included in the day's schedule. Available during ski season.

Mountain Explorers - For ages 7 through 14.Older children discover the thrill of skiing, improving their technique and advancing to the more difficult slopes. Available during ski season.

Ski Buddy - For ages 6 and up. Little experts who don't need a lesson can make a date for two hours of fun ski time with a Ski Buddy. Available weekends and holidays during ski season.

Junior Explorers - For ages 9 through 14. An adventure day camp offering tubing, hiking, fishing, trips to nearby caverns and much more. Offered daily in the summer beginning in mid-June.

Children's Lessons: Ski Bugs (Ages 3-5) - This one hour lesson is just right for the littlest skiers to experience sliding on snow for their first time. Ski Bugs is designed to give small children their first introduction to the sport of skiing in a safe and fun environment. Low instructor to student ratios ensure that your child's first experience is closely supervised and exciting for everyone. Ski Bugs hit the snow daily at 9:30, 11:30, and 1:30. Ski Bugs is not available for night skiing. Due to restricted class size, space is limited. Reservations are recommended and can be made at the Ski and Snowboard School desk in Skyline Pavilion, or by calling (804) 325-8063. Lift tickets are not required.

Mountain Explorers (Ages 7-14) - The flagship of Wintergreen's children's programs, Mountain Explorers is for all young people ages seven to fourteen. We take children from first timers, to the very best rippers on the mountain, and let them spend all day on the slopes with a dedicated member of our staff. All children are grouped according to age and ability level. Mountain Explorers combines ski or snowboard instruction with the fun and excitement of spending your whole day out on the slopes. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made at the Ski and Snowboard School desk in Skyline Pavilion, or by calling (804) 325-8063.

The Mountain Explorers program includes:

Lift Access; Five hours out on the mountain with instruction; Lunch;

Rates: Full Day $79 Half Day $50 (does not include rentals)

Registration for Mountain Explorers is from 8:15-8:45 a.m. at the Ski and Snowboard School desk in Skyline Pavilion. All children must be registered and ready to ski by 8:45a.m. This program end at 3pm, to allow time for children to ski with their parents. A minimum of three children must be signed up in advance for the program to take place each day.

Babysitting: Call the resort for a list of preferred babysitters.

Family Recreational Activities: Horseback Riding - The Rodes Farm Stables in Stoney Creek offer horseback riding mid-March through November. Open every day, except Wednesdays. Trail rides, sunset trail rides, pony rides for children, vaulting and lessons are available. Swimming - The Wintergarden Spa and Fitness Center indoor pool is open year-round. "Ground Zero" Game Room - Open 9 a.m.-11 p.m. daily, the Game Room is equipped with video games. Located off the breezeway across from the Nature Center.

Lodging: Wintergreen Rental Accommodations - Pprivately owned condominiums and single-family homes are tastefully decorated and furnished. These carefully maintained accommodations range in size from studio to five-bedroom condominiums and homes from two to seven bedrooms. Comfortable living areas, fully equipped kitchens, and cozy fireplaces, found in most accommodations, are perfect for families or to share with friends. Our multi-night rates and package plans offer substantial savings on accommodations, recreation and meals when included. You can tailor your holiday to the number of nights you wish to stay and take advantage of a quiet mountain getaway or an activity-filled vacation. Also, availble are : Wintergreen Accommodations Upgraded - Wintergreen Resort management, in partnership with participating rental owners, initiated an aggressive accommodations improvements program for 1998/99 designed to elevate the quality of the Wintergreen lodging experience. Wintergreen is committed to meeting guest expectations and insuring a positive lodging experience that delivers value by providing relaxing, comfortable, attractively decorated and well equipped accommodations, reflective of our resort environment and image. This is an on-going program, however, we will make significant decor and furnishing improvements in nearly all of our accommodations throughout 1999 and 2000..

Amenities: The Copper Mine Restaurant and Lounge - Enjoy informal, relaxed breakfasts and elegant gourmet dinners at the Copper Mine. Breakfast specialties include our "Mountain Breakfast", a choice of juice, two eggs any style, breakfast meats, potatoes or grits, and coffee or tea. The "Miner's Skillet" is also a favorite with layered potatoes, Canadian bacon, and cheddar cheese, all topped with two eggs. Any style breakfast entrée prices range from $3.50 to $10.95 including our breakfast buffet. Special value pricing for the kids. Devils Grill Restaurant and Lounge - The newest restaurant located at the Devils Knob Golf Course. Dine at the top with a spectacular view. Patio dining available, in season. If you enjoy elegant dining in a "club" like atmosphere, you will want to make reservations at Devils Grill Restaurant. The Devils Grill menu features a wide array of popular and memorable menu items ranging from freshly prepared seafood to hand cut steaks, as well as several innovative vegetarian dishes, all done with a contemporary Southern flare.

If you are interested in a more casual dining experience after a round of golf or tennis, come and join us in our full service lounge for a hearty sandwich or burger with cold beverage, while enjoying your favorite sporting event on one of our three televisions. Luncheon entrees range from $3.95 to $7.95. Dinner entrée prices range from $11.95 to $24.95. A child's menu is also available.

Devils Grill serves lunch and dinner May through October, and dinner from December through March. Reservations are required for dinner. MAP coupons accepted.

The Edge at Cooper's Vantage Restaurant - Wintergreen's most casual restaurant, great for family dining. The Edge at Cooper's Vantage serves lunch and dinner with specialties including spicy buffalo wings, Virginia barbecue, marinated flank steak and a variety of tempting pasta dishes. Entrée prices range from $5.75 to $17.95 and reservations are not required. Dining hours are subject to change seasonally and live entertainment is also featured seasonally. MAP coupons accepted.

Café Verandah at Stoney Creek - A unique dining experience combining the splendor of the Blue Ridge Mountains with panoramic views of the Stoney Creek Golf Course.Located in the heart of our Stoney Creek facility, Café Verandah offers a unique combination of traditional clubhouse fare.Open for lunch and dinner daily during golf season.

Seasonal Dining Options - Blue Ridge Terrace Grill - Open weekdays and holidays during ski season, weather permitting. Outdoor dining overlooking the ski slopes.

Pryors Cafeteria - For hot chocolate between ski runs to a full meal, visit our cafeteria in the Blackrock Village Center. Enjoy pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and ethnic specialties as well. Open daily late December through early-March.

Checkerberry Cabin - Chili, hot sandwiches, snacks and soft drinks are available on the slopes at the Chekerberry Cabin. Located near the base of the Diamond Hill chairlift. Open for lunch during ski season.

The Copper Mine, Devils Grill, The Edge at Cooper's Vantage and Café Verandah restaurants offer special menus for children ages 12 and under.

Lounges/Entertainment - Seasonally, Wintergreen offers a wide variety of quality musical entertainment. You'll enjoy big band, beach, bluegrass, folk, rock, and jazz. Check "This Week at Wintergreen" or Channel 10 on television for further information.

The Edge at Cooper's Vantage Lounge - The casual atmosphere of Cooper's Vantage Lounge in the Skyline Pavilion is perfect for relaxing with your favorite drink, taking in a view of the slopes and enjoying live entertainment and dancing. See "This Week at Wintergreen" for entertainment information

The Devils Grill Lounge - Whether finishing a game of golf or coming off the slopes, the Devils Grill lounge is the perfect place to unwind. Great appetizers, cocktails and more.

Café Verandah Lounge - Experience spectacular views of both the Stoney Creek Golf Course and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Gristmill Espresso/Cappuccino Bar - Enjoy a delicious Italian coffee in the Mountain Inn. Open during ski season.
